例年に比べ、今年は7月になった今でも、さほど「暑い」という日がほとんどないニューヨークですが、夏と言えば「プール！」ですよね。ニューヨークの公式水泳シーズンは、6月の下旬からとなっていますが、とはいえ、このニューヨーク、とくにマンハッタンのどこにプールがあるの？　と不思議に思う人も多いでしょう。スポーツジムや、大学が持っているスポーツ施設内にプールがあるのは、見たり聞いたりしている人もいるかもしれませんが、実際に見たことのある人はとても少ないと思います。ところが、じつはマンハッタン内には有料プールや市民プールがたくさんあるのです。しかも、夏季のみオープンしている市民プールの屋外プールは無料、また、年会費75ドルを支払って会員になれば、屋内プールやその他の施設の利用のほか、クラスやイベントにも参加できるという充実ぶり！　そんな素敵なプールが、アッパー・イーストサイドの『John Jay Park & Pool
』、ウエスト・ビレッジの『Tony Dapolito Recreation Center』 、ロウワー・イーストサイドの『Hamilton Fish Recreation Center』などにあり、どこもすべて無料。しかし、どこも芋洗い状態に混雑しているのは仕方のないことで、平日のオープン時などを狙えば多少はゆったりとスイミングを楽しめるでしょう。

そんななか、じつは大穴場の無料市営プールがあるのでご紹介！　それが、このセントラルパーク内にある『Lasker Pool Central Park（レイカー・プール・セントラルパーク）』。110ストリートの入口から水辺の遊歩道を歩いて行くと、緑に囲まれた円形のスイミングプールが。
ここは、子供プールでは水遊びにはしゃぐ子供たちや、プールサイドで日光浴をする若者などで混雑してはいますが、プール自体は比較的空いているのがポイント！　また、プールを楽しんだあとは、セントラルパークで他のアクティビティーが楽しめるのも魅力です。営業は9月5日までで、もちろん無料です！
