７月４日は、“ジュライフォース”の呼称で知られているアメリカの独立記念日です。毎年このジュライフォースになると、夜のニュースや翌日のニュースで、ここニューヨークだけでなく、全米にとある日本人の映像が流れ、その名前は一躍有名になります。その名前は「小林尊（Takeru Kobayashi）」さん。もうお気づきのかたも多いと思いますが、彼は、毎年7月4日にニューヨークはブルックリンのコニーアイランドで行われる『Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest（ホットドック早食い競争）』の常連出場者で、2001年から2006年まで6連覇の記録を持つ、日本が誇るホットドックの早食い達人なのです。残念ながら、今年2009年は惜しくも優勝を逃してしまいましたが、全米からの小林さんへの暑い視線は、これからも注ぎ込まれ続けることでしょう。しかしなぜ、“ホットドックの早食い”などという奇妙な大会が行われているのか、不思議に思う方もいると思いますが、その理由は、なんとこのコニーアイランドこそが、ホットドック発祥の地だからなのです。

ブルックリンの南の端にある、コニーアイランドは、昔からニューヨーカーのお手頃ビーチリゾートとして人気が高いエリアです。そんなビーチエリアに1950年代に登場したのが、このアミューズメント・パーク『Deno’s Wonder Wheel Amusement Park（ディノズ・ワンダーウィール・アミューズメント・パーク）』。全米一などと呼ばれるような派手な絶叫マシーンこそありませんが、園内の遊具のデザインや発色は、最新の絶叫マシーンでは絶対に真似できない、ノスタルジックなかわいさが漂っています。またビーチ沿い立ちにも、そんなアメリカンな発色の飲食店が建ち並び、目を楽しませてくれます。そして、忘れてはならないのが、夏のお楽しの花火！　毎週金曜日の夜９時半からあがるので、金曜日の夜はデートスポットに早変わりです。
