ＮＹのアート“ツウ”が通うブルックリン美術館のエキシビション

Gustave Caillebotte（ギュスターヴ・カイユボット）といえば、印象主義時代を語るうえでは欠かすことのできない、印象派を代表するフランスの画家です。またカイユボットは、絵画の収集家としての知名度の方が高かったのですが、近年（1960～70年代）の再評価によって“画家”としてその名が残るようになったことでも知られています。その作品の数々は、多くの人々から「現代性を強く喚起させる独特の自然主義的作品」と言われ、また「ブルジョワ的」とも呼ばれた古典的な表現手法も、カイユボットを語るに忘れてはいけない点です。そのカイユボットのエキシビションが、７月５日までブルックリン・ミュージアムで開催されています。マンハッタンのMOMA（ニューヨーク近代美術館）やMET（メトロポリタン美術館）、グッゲンハイム・ミュージアムに比べると、ちょっぴりマイナーな印象はありますが、世界有数のエジプト・コレクションのほか、アフリカ、オセアニア、オリエントの美術品収集も、とても充実しています。また、この美術館は、1880年代マッキシム・ミードとホワイトが設計したボザール風のオリジナル・プランで、その約4分の1は完成したのですが、未完成のまま美術館が運営されてきたという、ユニークなストーリーがあることでも有名な美術館です。

このカイユボットのエキシビションは、Meyer Schapiro Wingの5階で行われており、彼の作品を代表するもののひとつである『Oarsman in a Top Hat（キャンバス・90×117cm）』をはじめ、6枚の絵画が展示されています。入場料は、大人10ドル、学生（要ID）6ドル、62歳以上と12歳以下は無料。開館時間は水曜日から金曜日は午前10時から午後5時、土日は午前11時から午後6時となっています。公開期間もあと1ヶ月半、この機会に、“ニューヨークの王道”とはまたひと味ちがったブルックリン・ミュージアムを堪能してみてください。
