やっと春訪れたマンハッタンですが、厳密に言えば、春を通り越してすでに初夏、と言ったほうが正解かもしれません。５月から10月にかけて、ニューヨーカーは、そのわずかな間の“寒くない季節”をとことん楽しもうとします。その楽しみ方の代表が、平日のアフターファイブ。真夏では、夜９時頃まではうっすら明るいニューヨークなので、夕方に仕事を終えると、できるだけアウトサイド・テーブルがあるカフェやレストランに繰り出します。とはいえ、食事のあとのバーとなると、アウトサイドのあるバーの数はぐっと減るため、「初夏の空気を楽しみながらカクテルを……」は、なかなか難しい状況に……。

そんなニューヨーカーのために突然登場したのが、フラットアイアンにあるこの『230 5th（230フィフス）』。『230フィフス』は、それまで、ビクトリア・ホテルであったオフィスビルの屋上部分の、約8,000スクエアフィートをリノベーションして作られた、広大なルーフトップ（屋上）バー。ヤシの木をはじめとする南国の植物が至る所に設置され、わざとクラシカルに作られたバーカウンターや座り心地のいい椅子、パラソルなどに囲まれ、初夏の夜風に拭かれてカクテルを飲んでいると、まるでリゾート地のビーチのバーにいるような錯覚に……。ところがそこから見える景色といえば、クライスラーやエンパイアステイトビルなどがそびえる、マンハッタンの美しい夜景、また西側に移動すれば、ニュージャージーの夜景も手に取るように一望できます。これまで、“夜景の見えるバー、ラウンジ”といえばホテルの最上階などで、“高いカクテルに相当のチップを支払って静かに楽しむ”というスタイルが相場でしたが、『230フィフス』なら、開放的な夏の夜、思い切り屋外の空気や夜景を楽しみながら、DJのプレイと共に、大騒ぎして飲むことができます！　収容人数は1000人以上、オンシーズン中なら、夕方４時から朝４時迄、毎日営業しています。
