メトロポリタン美術館の分館、正式名は「クロイスターズ美術館」。マンハッタン北部のフォート・タイロン公園内にあるこちらの美術館は、フランスやスペインの中世の修道院の遺物を集めて作り上げられた建物自体が芸術作品であり、中世ヨーロッパの美術品約5000点が展示されています。

建物の中は、調度品やドア、窓、柱などすべてが調和されてそこにあって造作を見るだけでも満ち足りた気分になってしまいます。

上の写真の奥に見えるFuentidneunaの礼拝堂の高いところに展示されているキリストの胴体です。

The Fuentiduena Chapelです。正面には十字架に張り付けられたキリスト像が２つあります。

ボッパルトの部屋のタペストリーとチェストです。

タペストリーの横に、The Lamentation　哀歌と名付けられた15世紀の作品があります。

有名なキュクサの回廊。柱頭彫刻がそれぞれ異なっていて趣があります。これは１２世紀にピレネー山脈にあるサン・ミッシェル・ド・キュクサ修道院にあった円柱の一部を収集して復元したものだそうです。冬は中庭と間に暖房のためガラス窓がはめられています。

これも有名なユニコーンのタペストリー。一番有名かもしれませんが全部で7枚あって、狩人がユニコーンを追いつめて生け捕るまでを描写したものが展示されています。

地下の宝物殿にある、聖母子像。12世紀にフランスのできた作品。象牙製です。ここの展示品は時々本館の特別展に出展されることがありますが、本館では撮影禁止となります。

同じく宝物殿にある、キリスト像。象牙でできたほんの１０ｃｍほどの像ですが見る角度によって表情が全然違います。素晴らしく表現力が豊かな像ですね。

ステンドグラスも小ぶりですが、趣があります。

クロイスターは、フォートタイロン公園のハドソン川と対岸のニュージャージーを見渡せる高台にあります。時間が許せば是非訪れてみてください。展示作品もさることながら、建物全体を堪能できて「来て良かった！」と思うこと間違いなしです。
