アメリカ自然史博物館はセントラルパークの西77丁目から81丁目の4ブロックを占める世界最大級の博物館です。収蔵する品目はなんと3200万点とう巨大なコレクションに加えて、2000年には球形のスペースシアターを包んだガラス製の立方体のプラネタリウムを含む宇宙の博物館、ローズ宇宙センター(Rose Center for Earth and Space)が完成しました。

セントラルパークの入口「ルーズベルト記念ホール」にはアロサウルスと子供を守るように寄り添うバロサウルスが出迎えてくれてます。入場料は博物館のみの場合大人＄15ですが、スペースショー、Ｉｍａｘシアターや特別展などとの組み合わせが３種類あるので、あらかじめ何を見るか決めてから行きましょう。チケットを買うときに迷ってしまいます。

ローズ宇宙センターは、ガラスで囲まれた巨大な球体の建物です。ここでは「天体の衝突」というスペースショーを見ることができます。４６億年前の地球の誕生、隕石の衝突などアクション満点の人気ショーです。

（左）正面を入ると哺乳類の展示ギャラリーです。中はかなり暗いのでデートコースにはもって来いですね。動物の生息する環境を立体的に再現したショーケースに剥製が展示してあります。（右）Giant Eland（アフリカ産の大型レイヨウ）哺乳類のギャラリーは140年もの歴史のある博物館だけあって、展示もやや時代を感じてしまいます。ガラスがちょっと汚れているのが残念です。

オーシャン・ホールでは天井から大きなシロナガスクジラの実物大の模型が展示されています。

7500万年前のアンモナイトの化石です。カナダのアルバータ州産ですが、ここで産するは化石は、プラセンティセラスといって、虹色に美しく輝く貴重なものだそうです。直径がゆうに60ｃｍ位ある大きなものです。素晴らしい色で輝いてます。

（左）トリケラトプスの化石です。7000万年前に北米で多く生息していたそうで、数百個の頭骨が発見されているそうです。恐竜館はこの博物館のまさにハイライトで大変貴重な化石が目白押しで展示してあります。（右）マンモスの化石です。この他に像の先祖のマストドンもあります。トリケラトプスが6000万年位で絶滅したのに比べ、マンモスは12000年前の氷河期まで生息していたそうです。

（左）アジアの人々のホールには日本ギャラリーもあります。ややメインテナンスが遅れてる感はしますが、ねつけ、日本刀、ひな人形、天皇家の３種の神器などなど見るべきものは結構多くあります。（右）1742年鎌倉時代の仏像。この他にもタイの仏像、チベット、中国、ロシア、東アジアの展示品などもあってこのホールはどちらかというと美術館という感じでした。

「ホール・オブ・ヒューマン・オリジンズ」と名付けられた新館です。ヒトの起源と進化の過程や脳や遺伝子の謎などが解説されています。たくさんの化石や、ホモサピエンスの模型、映像、パネルなどで人類の歴史を楽しみながら学ぶことができます。

（左）これは13000〜16000年前に象牙に掘られた馬です。この他にも30000年前に作られた動物、人物の模型が展示されています。エジプト文明の１〜２万年も前にこのような精巧なものがすでに作られていたというのは驚きです。（右）ジャイアントセコイアの輪切りです。ここにご紹介したのは展示品のほんの一部です。とにかく32000万点も標本や貯蔵品があるのですから、１日かけてもたぶん飽きないでしょう。ニューヨーカーに人気なのも十分納得。世界に誇れる素晴らしい博物館です！
