先月NBAのシーズンが開幕したことをお伝えしましたが、その一方でNFL（アメリカンフットボール）の今季は早くも大詰めを迎えています。１月よりノックアウト方式のプレーオフ戦に突入し、１月中旬時点で残ったのは４チームのみ。１年前に余りにも劇的な形で頂点に立ったニューヨーク・ジャイアンツが敗退してしまったのは残念ですが、それでも全米のスポーツファンの熱気は覚めやりません。これからまさに１年で最も熱いクライマックスの時期を迎えようとしているのです。

日本のみなさんにとっては、“アメリカンスポーツ”というと、どうしても野球とバスケのイメージが強いようですが、実際に米国内でもっとも人気が高いのはこのフットボールであると言われます。「体のぶつかり合いと頭脳戦の両方を兼ね備えた高度なゲームだから」「黒人、白人のどちらにも活躍の土壌があるから」、などと大人気の原因として様々な理由が挙げられていますが、１年で16試合だけという試合数の少なさも希少価値を煽るという意味で人気の秘密なのかもしれません。本拠地で行なわれるのは、その16戦のうち８試合のみ。それだけしか地元チームの勇姿を間近で目撃する機会がないわけですから、貴重なチャンスを逃してはならないと、試合当日はアメリカのどの街でも、まるでお祭りのような騒ぎとなるのです。とくにプレーオフに突入したこの時期は、スタジアムはおろかスポーツバーまで大盛況。今季の４強を形成するフィラデルフィア・イーグルス、アリゾナ・カーディナルス、ボルチモア・レイブンス、ピッツバーグ・スティーラーズはどれもバランスの取れた好チーム。それぞれにドラマが詰まっており、どこが最後まで勝ち進もうとまた新たな名シーンを生み出すこと間違いなしです。もしこの時期にあなたがアメリカを訪れたなら、NFL戦をライブで観るのは難しくとも、多くのファンがゲーム観戦しているスポーツバーに立ち寄ってみるのも良いかもしれません。大熱狂のファンとともに声を枯らして応援すれば、「NFLはアメリカの情熱」という言葉の意味が、少なからず理解できるに違いないのです！
