メトロポリタン美術館（美術専門ガイド解説ツアー）

ニューヨークには多くの美術館があり、特にそれらが集まるアッパー・イーストサイドからイースト・ハーレムにかけてのエリアは、ニューヨーク市が公式に指定した9つの有名美術館や博物館があることから、ミュージアム・マイル（Museum Mile）と呼ばれています。今回はそのミュージアム・マイルの中のいくつかのスポットをご紹介します。

〜フリックコレクション〜

ニューヨークにこんなにも「静寂で気品のある空間」があったのかと驚くような、まさに美術館の奥座敷とも言えるのが「フリックコレクション」です。

ヘンリー・クレイ・フリックは鉄鋼王アンドリュー・カーネギーの鉄鋼会社に共同経営者として迎えられ、有り余る財を築きあげ、美術品の収集にのめり込んだのだそうです。彼が実際に住んでいた邸宅が美術館になっていますが、ユニークなのは彼が飾っていた通りのそのままの順で作品展示されている事です。他の美術館とは一味違った空間となっているのはそういった理由からかもしれません。ここには、フェルメールの作品が３点も展示されています。中庭に面した回廊に「兵士と笑う女」「中断されたレッスン」そして少し離れた部屋に大きな「婦人と召使」が展示されています。フリックコレクションのしっとりとした空気の中でのフェルメールは、メトロポリタン美術館やナショナル・ギャラリーのフェルメールとはなんとなく、違った印象がします。

〜国立アカデミー美術館（National Academy Museum」〜

メトロポリタン美術館の北８９丁目に「国立アカデミー美術館」（National Academy Museum」があります。アートのブティックのようなショーウィンドウがあるので思わずお店と間違えて中に入ってしまいますが、ギフトショップを抜けると立派な美術館になっています。

ここはニューヨークで一番古い歴史を持つ美術館だそうです。運営母体の国立アカデミーは１８６０年代に公募を行って２３丁目と４番街に最初のアカデミーを設立したとあります。２年毎にアカデミー会員以外の一般作品を公募して展示が行われるそうですが入選するのは相当に難しいそうで、ちなみに次回の公募は２０１０とのこと。

〜グッゲンハイム美術館（Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum）〜

帝国ホテルなどの設計で有名なフランク・ロイド・ライトの設計「グッゲンハイム美術館」です。渦巻き状の超モダンな建物にもかかわらず５番街の落ち着いた街並みにしっくりと溶け込んで全く違和感を感じさせないのは不思議です。見慣れているせいもあるかもしれませんが、どう皆さんはお感じになるかご自身の目で確かめてみてください。

〜ニューヨーク市立美術館（Musuem of City of New York）〜

１０４丁目にある「Musuem of City of New York」です。ここまで訪れる人ニューヨーカーでもあまり居ないでしょうね。ただ自然史博物館のすぐ南隣にある歴史博物館にもレシートを持っていくと入れるのでニューヨークの歴史に興味のある方にはお薦めかもしれません。１６世紀の大航海時代にニューヨークを発見した英国人のヘンリー・ハドソンの帆船の模型やオランダ人の入植から交易によってニューヨークが発展する様子などが展示されています。写真も多く展示されています。

〜クーパー・ヒューイット・国立デザイン博物館（Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum）〜

次はスミソニアン・インスティチュートの運営の「クーパー・ヒューイット・国立デザイン博物館」です。ＭＯＭＡやメトロポリタン美術館にも工芸品が数多く展示されていますが、ここはアメリカで初めてのデザイン専門の美術館として１８９７年に創設されたそうです。日常的に使う食器、家具、諸々の工芸品など紀元前のから現在までのデザインに関わるありとあらゆるものが展示されています。ギフトショップも充実しているので是非時間が許せば訪れてみてください。

〜アンドリュー・カーネギー邸（Andrew Carnegie House）〜

建物は鉄鋼王のアンドリュー・カーネギーの邸宅を修復したものです。１９０１年に完成したそうですが、鉄骨を初めて使用し、またオティスのエレベータを備えたアメリカで最初の建物だったそうです。またセントラルヒーティングとエアコンを備えていて、地下の２つのボイラーに石炭を貯蔵庫から運ぶためのミニ機関車も備え付けられていたそうでうす。
ミュージアム・マイルにはこのほか、１０５丁目の「バリオ美術館」（El Museo del Bario、９２丁目の「ユダヤ美術館」（The Jewish Museum）そしてもちろんメトロポリタン美術館など全部で９つの美術館があります。フリックコレクションは南に離れているので含まれませんが、ここだけでも半日かける価値は十分にあると思います。
アメリカ東海岸は西海岸と比べると歴史の厚みが各段にあって美術館１つみても奥が深いですね。１日ゆっくりとミュージアム・マイルを散策されてみてはいかがですか？
