日本ではあまり聞かない「アップルサイダー」、聞くとしたら、リンゴ味の炭酸飲料というところですが、アメリカでいうところのアップルサイダーとは、りんごのしぼり汁を発酵させたもののことで、「ホット・アップルサイダー」は、これにシナモンやグローブ、ナツメグを入れて、ことことと鍋で煮て熱いうちにいただく飲みもののことをいいます。このホット・アップルサイダーは、体を温めてくれるばかりでなく、心までじわ〜っと温めてくれる素敵な飲み物。ここでは、そんなホット・アップルサイダーをご紹介します。

日本の青森とほぼ同じ緯度のニューヨークは、アップステイトにはりんご園がたくさんあり、リンゴの産地としても有名であるだけに、長くて厳しいこの冬の時期は、まさにホット・アップルサイダーは冬の風物詩ともいえる飲みものと言えます。アップルサイダーは、家庭によってそれぞれレシピが違ったりするのも特徴ですが、一口飲めば、混じりけのないりんご果汁と、シナモンやナツメグのスパイスが体を温め、飲み終えても、しばらくは体がほかほかしている不思議な飲みもの。通常は家庭の冷蔵庫にあって、飲む時に暖めたり、常にお鍋にはいっていたりするのが一般的ですが、ニューヨークでは、週末などに行われる青空市場（定期的にアップステイトの農家の人達が農作物を売りにくる市場）などで、１杯１ドルで飲むことができます。最近では、カフェ＆レストランやスタンドカフェなどにもメニューとして加えている所も増えて来ています。また、とくに気温が下がる夜になれば、人気レストランのテーブル待ちで、外で列を作って順番を待っている人達に、お店からサービスとしてふるまっているところもよく見かけます。この寒い時期こそ、是非ホット・アップルサイダーをトライしてみてください。
