日本では、多くのペットショップが、フードや飼育のための必需品などと、子犬や子猫のほか、小動物と一緒に販売されていますが、ここニューヨークでは多くの場合、“ペットショップ”といえば、フードや小物、薬、サプリメントなどのみを販売するペットサプライ・ショップをさすため、「ペットショップ」と聞いて「可愛い子犬や子猫がいる！」と思って行っても、かわいいペットに出会えることはほとんどありません。なので、子犬や子猫を購入したい場合は、インターネットや口コミ、フリーペーパーなどでブリーダーやペットを販売しているショップを見つけることが先決です。ここでご紹介する『Le Petit Puppy（ル・ペティート・パピー）』は、小型犬用専用のかわいいお洋服や、人間も顔負けのゴージャスなデザインや素材のリードやカラー、またベッドなどもあるのですが、メインはパピー（子犬）。ウエスト・ビレッジのクリストファー・ストリート沿いにある『ル・ペティート・パピー』の、道に面したガラス張りのショーウインドーでは、無邪気に遊ぶパピー達の姿に人々が立ち止まり、携帯電話のカメラでその様子を撮影したり、しばらく見とれたりと常に人が群がっている状態です。

ここで扱われている犬種はいずれも小型犬で、ベーシックな日記を誇るヨークシャテリアやミニチュア・ダックスフントのほか、珍しいところでは、純血のジャパニーズ・チン（狆）や、中国のパグなどもブリーダーからダイレクトで入荷されています。ペットショップ（動物を売買するショップ）については、日本でも様々な論議がありますが、ここ『ル・ペティート・パピー』は、アメリカの“動物を売買するにあったての認可”、USDAとして登録されたショップなので、子犬達の原産も、ショップに来てからの健康状態、また引き渡し時の飼い主への指導などが徹底されているので安心です。みなさんも、ショーウインドー越しにでも、その愛くるしい姿に癒されてみませんか？
