ニューヨークでは、12月に入ったとたん街中がクリスマス色に染まり、ショップやカフェ、レストラン、ダイナーにいたるまで、店内までもクリスマス・ディスプレイで彩られます。もちろんペットショップでも、ショーウィンドーのディスプレイはクリスマス仕様になりますし、店内にもツリーやリースが飾られたりしますが、そこはやっぱりニューヨーク、ここでは、ペットへのクリスマス・プレゼントやアパレル用品までもがクリスマス仕様になるのです！　ペットといっても、主にわんちゃんと猫ちゃん用のアイテムがメインなのですが、この時期になると、自分のペットへだけでなく、仲良しのお友達のペットや、日頃ドッグランやお散歩時に仲良くしている犬同士のお友達のために、というように、ちゃんとその目的用のアイテムが勢ぞろいするのです。その主なラインナップは、クリスマスツリーやサンタクロースなどのモチーフがついたセーターやコート、またサンタクロースの帽子や、トナカイの角のカチューシャなどのアパレル系から、プレゼントボックス、雪だるま、トナカイなどの形をしたペット用クッキー、ぬいぐるみ、ボール、ねこじゃらしなどなど、そのアイテム数は数えきれない程豊富にそろっています。

とはいえ、色や大きさ、サイズなどの幅広さを考えると、個人ブティックではその店舗面積から限りがあり、特にアパレル系は、チワワやヨークシャテリアなどの小型犬用のみ……、ということがほとんどです。そこで、ちっちゃな猫ちゃんから超大型犬まで、幅広いサイズのペットへのクリスマス・プレゼントが揃えられているショップをご紹介します。それが、全米に900店以上の店舗数を持つ大型チェーン店の『PETCO（ペトコ）』。犬、猫、ハムスター、うさぎのペットサプライはもちろんのこと、イグアナやトカゲ、金魚、熱帯魚、小動物まで店内で購入できる超大型ペットショップ。マンハッタンではユニオンスクエアの他、
