ハロウィーンが終われば、街はすっかり11月末のサンクスギビング・デーの商品やディスプレイで埋め尽くされますが、それとほぼ同時進行で準備が始まるのがクリスマス。とくに、12月10日頃からは、すでにカードやプレゼントの郵送の数が急増するため、郵便局自体も大変混雑しますし、カードやプレゼントの到着日数も通常より時間がかかるため、遠方にカードやプレゼントを送る必要のある人は、できるだけ早めに準備に取りかからなくてはいけません。なにより、例え近い人に手渡すのであっても、12月に入ってからのカー同売り場の混雑といったら大変なものです。また、クリスマスを始め、プレゼントのラッピングのほとんどは自分で行うのがアメリカですから、ラッピングペーパーやリボンなどもできるだけ早めに、そして大量に買い込まなくてはいけません。そんな時期にこそ役立ってくれるのが、この『Papyrus（パピルス）』です。この『パピルス』は、センスとクオリティーの高さにはニューヨーカーから一目置かれているグリーティング・カード、ラッピングペーパーの専門店で、そのほかにも、一般点ではあまり見られないような、ユニークでソフィスティケイトされたステーショナリーがさりげなく置かれているのが魅力です。ニューヨーク・シティー内だけでも18カ所のロケーションの店舗があり、代表としてご紹介したソーホー店のほか、ロックフェラー店（212-265-9003）やグランドセントラル駅店（212-490-9894）など、マンハッタン内の主要ロケーションには必ずあるのが嬉しい限りです。

すでに、店内にはクリスマス用のカードやラッピング・アイテムなどで溢れていますが、『パピルス』でおすすめしたいのが、オリジナリティー溢れるカードの数々。もちろん、どこの文具店や書店のカードコーナーでも見られるような定番カードもありますが、ここでは、ほんのわずかしか製造していない、アーティストによる手作りのオリジナリティー溢れるカードの数々。お値段は1枚7ドル前後とちょっぴりお高めですが、その繊細なデコレーションやセンスの良さは、選ぶほうも、いただくほうにとっても嬉しいものです。
