フィリーズが28年振りのワールドシリーズ　制覇田口壮選手が2個目の優勝リングを手にしました！

タンパベイ・レイズ対フィラデルフィア・フィリーズの対戦となった今季のワールドシリーズは、４勝１敗でフィリーズが快勝。見事にフランチャイズ史上２度目（28年振り）となる優勝を飾りました。そしてフィリーズに所属する田口壮選手は、これで自身２つめのチャンピオンリングを獲得したのです。今季終了後に「このチームは常にまとまっている気がしていた。苦しかったけど本当に凄いチームです」、と語った田口選手には、残念ながら今回のシリーズ中にプレーの機会は訪れませんでした。しかしメジャーリーグ最強を証明したチームのロースターに名を連ねただけでも素晴らしいこと。過去５年間で３度もワールドシリーズに進出し、２度も世界一に輝いたのは日本人としてもちろん田口選手が初めてです。そしてその田口選手の価値を、フィリーズのチャーリー・マニエル監督は「彼は戦い方を知っている。バットコントロールが巧みで、打席に送ってもあまり三振しない。走塁が上手く、盗塁もできる。このチームの外野陣の顔ぶれでは充分な出場機会を得るのは難しかった。それでも田口が優れた選手であることに変わりはないし、チームの一員だ」、と表現してくれました。まさに最大限の賞讃と言って良いでしょう。そしてこれほどまでに監督に信頼されているプレイヤーが日本人であることを、私たちは同国人として誇りに思うべきなのかもしれません。

こうして、数多くの新たなドラマとストーリーを生み出し、2008年のMLBシーズンは終わりました。今季終了後に田口選手のフィリーズとの契約は更新されないことが発表されたのですが、彼が次にどのチームでプレーすることになるかにも注目しておきたいところ。そしてもしも来季に新天地でもワールドシリーズに辿り着いたとしたら、田口壮はまさに“勝利の使者”ですよね？
