マンハッタン内でよく見かける大型チェーン店ブックストアといえば、グリーンのロゴが印象的な『バーンズ＆ノーブル』がメジャーですが、アメリカ国内において、忘れてはならないもう一件の大型チェーン店ブックストアが、この『Borders Books, Music & Café（ボーダース・ブックス、ミュージック＆カフェ）』。どの州でも、『ボーダース』の愛称で親しまれているこの大型書店は、ミシガン州に本店を置きながら、マンハッタンだけでも、ウォールストリート、マレーヒル、ペンステーション、ミッドタウンなどと５カ所有り、アメリカ国内はもちろんのこと、現在、世界中で1100店舗以上の店舗数を誇るまさに巨大チェーン店。この『ボーダース』での品ぞろえは、店舗面積の広い支店なら、本だけでなんと200,000冊をそろえているというスケールの大きさ。その数の多さは、やはり“たくさんの人”が日々買い求めに来ると言う事だけあって、珍しい本やマイナーなアーティストの作品集というよりは、メジャーな売れ筋の商品もどこよりも早く確実に、また売り切れないように常に維持するためにあります。
また、一般消費者のニーズに答えるべく、紙媒体に限らず、CDやDVDといった、消費者が求める情報の全ての形態を完備しているというところも、大型店ならではの徹底ぶりがうかがえる点です。

もう一方のチェーン店『バーンズ＆ノーブル』には、店内のくつろぎの場として“スターバックス・コーヒー”が設置されていて、暖かいコーヒーとともにケーキやマフィンがいただけるようになていますが、ここ『ボーダース』では、ニューヨークならではのカフェ“Dean & DeLuca Café”が店内に設置されており、
“Dean & DeLuca”の厳選された素材を使った軽食や、ニューヨークの人気店として名を連ねるベーカリーのケーキやドーナツなどがずらりと並んでいるため、本を買う目的以外にも、買い物やカフェに立ち寄る人が多いのもまた事実。コーヒーのおいしさにいたっては、「スターバックスやダンキンよりおいしい」というニューヨーカーもいるほどで、ゆっくりコーヒーを飲みながら本探しをする人の姿も多く見かけます。
