2008年のMLBもついに大詰め。勝ち残ったチームは世界一に向けてラストスパートをかけ始めていますが、そのなかでも、今季はとくに日本人選手たちの大活躍が目立っています。プレーオフ４強を形成するレッドソックス、レイズ、フィリーズ、ドジャースにはそれぞれ日本人選手が在籍。このコラムを書いている時点（10月14日）では、まだワールドシリーズ進出チームは決まっていませんが、どこが勝ち進もうと今年も必ず日本人がチャンピオンリングが獲得することになるのです。
昨季王者・レッドソックスではお馴染みの松坂大輔、岡島秀樹の両投手が今季もピッチングスタッフの主軸を担っています。大躍進・レイズの切り込み隊長を務める岩村明憲選手もすっかりチームリーダーの１人として確立しました。さらにドジャースでも黒田博樹、斉藤隆の２投手が存在感を築いています。そしてフィリーズの一員として、自身２個目のチャンピオンリング獲得を目指す田口壮選手のことも忘れてはいけません。アメリカ中西部のセントルイスからフィラデルフィアに移った今季、田口選手は打撃不振のため気の荒い地元ファンから罵声を浴びることも少なくありませんでした。しかしこれまで多くの苦難を乗り越えて来た本人は、それでも「せっかちな東海岸の気質にもやっと慣れて来ました」と爽やかな笑顔で語ります。そして細かなプレーが重要視されるプレーオフこそが、職人気質なこの選手の能力が評価されるとき。２年前のプレーオフで、田口に痛打され続けたビリー・ワグナー投手（メッツ／現役最高級のクローザー）が「ソー・タグチはベーブ・ルースのようだった」とコメントしたことも懐かしく思い出されます。
