アメリカはスポーツ大国！　野球やバスケットボールだけにとどまらず、サッカーはもちろんのこと、アメリカン・フットボールやアイスホッケーも、野球やバスケと同じくらいの人気があり、大きな試合がある日などは、家でまったりとテレビでスポーツ観戦などしていられないアメリカ人達は、仲間たちと行きつけのスポーツバーへ行き、ビールを呑みながら大画面に映し出される白熱する試合に熱狂しながら応援する人達がほとんどです。決勝戦レベルの試合の日などは、スポーツバーの隣のビルまで、その声援と雄叫びで地鳴りがするほどと言います。

そんな「スポーツ大好き」なアメリカ人と、世界中から集まってきた人が暮らしているニューヨークは、都市レベルで見ても、まさにスポーツ愛好者の多い都市といえるでしょう。そんなニューヨークで、意外とまだ知られていない穴場のスポットが、ここ『Sports Museum Of America
（スポーツ・ミュージアム・オブ・アメリカ）』。ここは、10種類以上のプロ・スポーツチームを持つニューヨークに、今年登場したばかりの、全米初のスポーツ博物館。オープニング・セレモニーには、オリンピック陸上金メダリストのカール・ルイスら往年のスーパースタ−や現役選手、およそ30人が出席し、そのことだけでも大きな話題を呼んだほど。最先端のテクノロジーを取り入れた館内には、スポーツの殿堂や選手個人から寄贈された1500点以上の貴重な品々が展示されていて、アメリカが発祥の地とされる野球のコーナーには、偉大なアメリカ人選手の展示物と共に、なんとイチロー選手のバットがあり、実際にそのバットを握ることができたりと、より身近にポロスポーツを楽しむことができます。日本人選手にまつわる展示物は、唯一“イチロー選手”のバットだけなので、でアメリカの野球界でのイチロー選手の偉大さがうかがえます。芸術の秋とスポーツの秋を、ニューヨークで同時に楽しむのもいいですね！
