ロックフェラー邸とユニオン教会

このツアーは、マンハッタンから約1時間の郊外、カイカットにあるロックフェラー邸とユニオン教会、またブロンクスにある「野口英世」、「高峰譲吉」の墓碑をハドソン川の景色を楽しみながら見学する見ごたえたっぷりのツアー。
世界一の大富豪、ロックフェラー家の人々が3世代にわたって住んだ豪邸には、息をのむような調度品や、個人の所有物であるピカソなどの美術コレクションの数々を見ることができます（専用の英語ツアーに参加します）。そのあとに訪れるユニオン教会では、美術館では見ることのできない、シャガール、マチスの幻想的なステンドグラスを堪能。最後に訪れる野口英世と高峰譲吉の墓石には、日本人として感慨深い想いにひたってしまいます。

☆ジョン・ロックフェラー
ロックフェラーといえば、マンハッタンのミッドタウンにそびえるビルディングをすぐに連想されるでしょう。では、このジョン・ロックフェラーという人は、いったいどんな人でしょう……？世界の“大富豪の代名詞”ともなった実業家として有名ですが、ただの大金持ちというわけではなく、月給25ドルの雑用係から身を起こし、そのビジネスセンスのよたかさと勤勉さで、その後、9億ドルを超える資産を持つ石油王になった “ビジネスの神”とも言われている人です。
ロックフェラーの父親は、嘘つきの薬売りとして悪評が高く、家族はとても苦労したそう。そのため、ロックフェラー氏は小さな頃から毎週日曜日に教会へ行き、働くことの大切さと、人を助けることの尊さを学んでいたといいます。ロックフェラー氏が97歳でその生涯を終えたとき、新聞には「ロックフェラー氏ほど莫大なお金を賢明に使った人がこれまでいたでしょうか！」と書かれました。
そんな　ロックフェラー氏の生まれて初めてのお金儲けは、母親が飼っている七面鳥の世話をしたお駄賃。ここまではどんな子供でもある話しですが、小戸置くのはここから。彼は、その他のお手伝いででも貰う小銭をすべて貯金し、50ドルが貯まった頃、そのお金に年利７％をつけて雇い主に貸したのです。１年後、なんとその利息は大の大人が10日間労働した賃金に相当したそう。ロックフェラー邸に訪れたら、この素晴らしいビジネスセンスが少しでも伝染するといいですね！

☆野口英世
1000円札の肖像にもなっている野口英世は、黄熱病や梅毒等の研究で知られる医学博士。また、コッホから始まる細菌学的医学権威の最後の一人ともいわれています。ガーナのアクラで黄熱病原を研究中、自身も感染して51歳で死去。ロ
ックフェラーとは親交が深く、ロックフェラー大学の図書館入り口の左右には、ロックフェラー1世と、野口英世の胸像が対になって並んでいます。

☆アンリ・マティス
20世紀前半の美術を代表する作品をいくつも生み出したことで、あまりにも有名です。フランスのノールの商人の家に産まれ、パリの大学では法律を学び、卒業後は、そのままパリ市内の法律事務所で働いていたマティス。その人生の転機は、そのころかかった虫垂炎にあり、その休職期間にたまたま読んだグーピルの『絵画論』がきっかけとなり、絵画制作を始めます。『ダンス』『帽子の女』のほかいくつもの名作を残し、1954年にニースで死去しますが、その生涯最後の作品となったのが、このツアーの最後に見学できるユニオンチャーチのステンドグラス。“全生涯の総仕上げ”だとされた、マティス85歳、亡くなる２日前に仕上げられた作品です。

☆マルク・シャガール
昨年、生誕120年を迎えたばかりのシャガールは、マティスと並ぶ20世紀を代表する美術家です。ロシアで生まれたユダヤ人のシャガールの生涯は、二度にわたる世界大戦の戦火やヨーロッパ中を踏みにじったナチ政権によるユダヤ民族への迫害、アメリカへの亡命などを経験してきながらも、生涯をとおして愛に満ちあふれた人だったシャガールは「芸術においても人生においても、基本に愛があればどんな事も可能なのです」、という言葉を残しています。そんな彼ですから、ヨーロッパ内の教会にもいくつもの宗教画やステンドグラスを残していますが、このユニオンチャーチ内では、室内を囲むように９枚もの彼によるステンドグラスを見ることができます。圧巻……、というよりはむしろ、幻想的な光と空気感に包まれた静寂に、自分が清められていくようです。
