ハーレムとハドソン渓谷 豪邸めぐり

このツアーは、ハーレムでアートとして有名な落書きの数々を楽しんだあと、ニュージャージー州からのハドソン渓谷とマンハッタンの素晴らしい景色を堪能し、アルパインなどの高級住宅街を見学するツアーです。一言で「ハーレムへ行く」といっても、ただ漠然と「マンハッタンの上のほうで黒人街……」という印象だけをもっている人も多いはず。でも、歴史や文化を知ってみると、もっと深い感心や興味がかき立てられるでしょう。

★ハーレムは正確にはどこ？

ハーレムは、ウエスト・ハーレム、セントラル・ハーレム、イースト・ハーレムと別れていますが、プエルトリコ人などのラテン系の人が密集するのは、俗にスパニッシュ・ハーレムと呼ばれるイースト・ハーレムで、ジャズやゴスペルを聞きに行ったり、ソウルフードを食べに行ったりするメッカは、マンハッタンのブロードウエイを心に、125丁目から155丁目までを指すウエスト・ハーレム、また、セントラル・パークの北の110丁目から、東西に走る125丁目はハーレム のメインストリートと呼ばれているのが、セントラル・ハーレムになります。

★ハーレムの今と昔

今からさかのぼること約400年前、アフリカから北アメリカ大陸に奴隷として連れて来られた黒人たちは、長い間、南部諸州で過酷な労働に従事させられ、南北戦争（1861〜65年）を経て奴隷制廃止を迎えました。その後、ニューヨークにも移り住んだ黒人たちは、やがてマンハッタンの北部（現在のハーレム）に落ち着き、1920年頃迄には現在の黒人街ハーレムが形成されました。その間、ここではさまざまな独自のインナーシティ・ブラックカルチャー（都市に住む黒人の文化）が息づいていったのです。そのため、この一帯はアフリカ系アメリカ人の文化とビジネスの中心地となり、歴史的な見所が満載なのも魅力のひとつといえます。一昔前までの“ニューヨークのハーレム”といえば危険エリアに指定されており、個人の観光も「行かない方がいい」とされていましたが、1990年代には、徹底的な治安改善政策によって環境が驚く程改善されました。

★ハーレムの文化

これまでの歴史的背景が作りあげてきたハーレムの文化は、食やアート、ファッションなどに反映され、世界中の人達に影響を与えているのは言うまでもないでしょう。「食」なら、125ストリート周辺から軒を連ねるソウルフードのレストラン、「アート」なら、このツアーでも堪能できるグラフィティー・アート、ファションなら、このツアー中にストリートで見る若者たちの着こなしなどから、ハーレムに息づいていうリアルな文化を感じる事ができます。

★セント・ジョーンズ・ディバイン

ハーレムを見学したあとに行くセント・ジョーンズ・ディバインは、またの呼びなをセント・ジョン大聖堂とよばれるもので、ちなみにこの教会、ほとんどのガイドブックに載っているにも関わらず、観光客がほとんど来ない観光スポットとしてもよく知られています。そんな不思議な（？）曰く付きの観光名所ですから、きっとツアーにでも参加しない限り、訪れるチャンスは無いかもしれませんね。
この教会は、なんともう100年以上も作り続けているのに、まだ完成しないという、世界最大の大聖堂です。1892年に建設がはじまってから、コツコツ作り続けて現時点でも未完成……。これも見ることで、あなたも“歴史的な１ページを目に焼き付けた”ということになりますね。
