その昔はモダンジャズのミュージシャンが集まって、ここでレコーディングしていたそうです。JAZZ好きにはレアな場所として知られるMINTONS PLAY HOUSE。
ここから北はワシントンハイツと呼ばれる地域になります。
駅を降りてすぐデューク・エリントンが住んでいたアパート。アメリカ国定歴史建造物にも指定されています。
この建物もアメリカ国定歴史建造物に指定されており、NYC内で一番古い建物らしいです。

ハーレム・ウォーキングツアー「ジャズやヒップホップゆかりの地を訪ねる」
2008年4月より新ツアーとして加わったハーレム・ウォーキング・ツアー。ハーレムの街の見どころを ガイドさんと一緒に巡ります。
ハーレムは、その語源がオランダ語で「楽園」を意味するように、１９００年代初頭オランダ人の別荘が多くありました。その後、地下鉄が開通し、白人向けの高級住宅が多く建設されましたが大恐慌後の不景気のためその多くが空家となり、奴隷解放後に南部から職を求めて移住した黒人が住むようになり、現在に至ります。
さて、ツアーはミッドタウンから地下鉄に乗り、マイケルジャクソンの「BAD」のプロモーションビデオが撮影されたことでも有名な125丁目の駅を目指します。地下鉄から降りて地上に出れば、そこはミッドタウンとは全く違う光景。まずは様々な路上店が並ぶこの地区ならではの雰囲気を楽しんで下さい。
黒人文化やR&B・SOUL・FUNKなど音楽好きな人は必ず行くべき、といわれるアポロシアターのSHOPや自分一人では行けないような古いレコード店にも立ち寄ります。
また、ガイドさんからハーレムの 歴史や文化についての話を聞きながら、モダンジャズの発祥地、アメリカの歴史的建造物に認定されているMINTONS PLAY HOUSEやコンテンポラリー・ミュージアム・ショップを訪れます。 初代財務長官でアメリカ10ドル札の表紙でおなじみのAlexander Hamiltonの家や銅像を見て、その後北に上ってシュガーヒルと呼ばれる高級住宅地を巡り、初代アメリカ大統領となったジョージ・ワシントンがアメリカ独立戦争の際、参謀本部として住んでいたモーリス・ジュメル・マンションも訪れます。
古い建物が壊され、現在ミッドタウンのようなガラス張りの近代的な建物やお店がどんどん建設されているSOHA開発地区など、少しずつおしゃれでモダンな街に生まれ変わろうとしている今のハーレムも見所です。貴重な歴史や文化の宝庫ハーレムは、見所スポット満載！ 近年、治安もだいぶ良くなり、訪れる人も多くなったといわれていますが、まだまだガイドブックを片手にうろうろするのはお勧めできません。そんなハーレムだからこそ、頼りになるガイドさんと歩けば、いろいろな歴史に触れながら、思い出に残る貴重な体験ができること間違いなしです。
