画家であった祖父の影響を強く受け、幼い頃から一緒に絵を描いていたため、小学校に入る頃には、すでに「将来は絵描きになりたい」と意識しており、その後も美術系の中学、高校に進学した北島さん。絵に対してのひらめきは、主に植物の複雑さや、空と光から受けるそう。「平面の絵画には写真や映像と違い、物理的な光が存在しないので、それを絵の具で作ってくなかで、自然光を見ると、この大胆さには太刀打ちできないなーと、いつも感心するんです」。そう語る北島さんの描く世界は、“女性にとってのエロチズム”。女性だけが見る“セクシュアルなその瞬間”は、植物からはディテールのイメージを、空や光からは全体の構図のアイディアを得ながら、描かれてゆきます。在住中のＮＹについては「いろんな価値観や生き方を受け入れる寛容さが好き。人それぞれ違って当たり前な分、自分のやりたいこと、自分らしさって何だろう？」と、日々考えさせられているそうです。
