アメリカ時間の7月6日、間もなくニューヨークのヤンキースタジアムで開催されるオールスターゲームの出場選手が一斉に発表されました。日本人選手では松井秀喜選手と松坂大輔投手の選出はなりませんでしたが、今季からメジャー入りした福留孝介選手、そして、お馴染みのイチロー選手の２人が、ファン投票によって『夢の球宴』メンバーに選ばれたのです。
イチロー選手はこれで８年連続の選出、メジャーを代表するスーパースターのキャリアに、またひとつ勲章が加わったことになります。ただ、今季のイチローは決して好調とはいえず、打率も信じ難いことについ最近まで３割以下。この成績では、高レベルなアリーグ外野陣の中で先発出場には値しないとの声もじつは多かったのです。６月下旬には、『スポーツ・イライストレイテッド』誌のウェブサイト上で、「チームより自身のスタイル重視」「トレード要員」などと散々に叩かれたこともありました。もちろん不振のチーム内で一流選手が批判を浴びるのは当然なのですが、イチロー選手の立場も、一時のようにアンタッチャブルではなくなったことは確かなのでしょう。もし、オールスター以降まで成績が向上しなかった場合には、トレードの噂がさらに増えてももう不思議はないのかもしれません。
しかしその一方で、今季は決して本来の力を発揮してはいなくとも、それでもイチローはネームバリュー的にすでにメジャーの球宴に欠かせない存在になった感があります。『MLB. TV』の解説者であるビリー・サンプル氏は、「アメリカンリーグの先頭打者がイチローでなかったら、アメリカの多くの野球ファンが欠落感を感じるんじゃないか？」とコメントしてくれました。それはもうMLBの周囲にいるものにとって共通の認識であり、そしてそんな想いこそがイチローがファンから多くの投票を得た原因だったに違いありません。
１年前のオールスターで、MVPを獲得した勇姿もまだ記憶に新しいところ。今年も昨季同様かあるいはそれ以上の大活躍で、夢舞台でイチローに批判の声など吹き飛ばしてしまって欲しいものです。
