短いながらも濃く、たくましいアメリカの歴史。そのなかでも、はずしてはならないのがアメリカンデニムの存在です。今回ご紹介するのが、ジーンズにこだわるニューヨーカーなら誰もがのどから手が出るほど欲しい、ハイエンド・デニムブランド、『EARNEST SEWN（アーネスト・ソーン）』です。アメリカンデニムといえば、リーバイス、セブン、トゥルーリリジョンなどと、たくさんの吊門ブランドがこれまでに登場していまが、そんななか、今もっともホットで注目度の高いデニム・ブランドがこの『アーネスト・ソーン』。これまでのジーンズと違うところは、デザインコンセプトに伝統的なアメリカンデニムに対する美学に加え、なんとも日本のわびさびのエッセンスをバランス良く織り交ぜてモノ作りをしているのです。ということで、『アーネスト・ソーン』のデザイナー兼、創業者のスコット・モリソンは、「ジーンズのプライス・タグにまでコーヒーの染みをつけてみた《というこだわり、2005年に、ニューヨークのファッショニスタのメッカとも言われるミートパッキングエリアに、2,500スクエアフィート(約233㎡)のフラッグシップ・ストアを立ち上げました。その間、『バーニーズ・ニューヨーク』など、ハイエンドな百貨店だけをターゲットに販売することに専念し、そして2007年にはヒップでお洒落な若者でにぎわうローワー・イーストサイド（L.E.S.）に２店舗目をオープンしました。このお店の位置するビルは、ニューヨークでも歴史的な場所で、1901年に建てられたもので、その昔アメリカで禁酒法が制定されていた時代に、闇業者がこちらでアルコール販売を行っていたとか。いずれにしても、話題性にかかせません。

気になるデニムの価格帯は、既製品が185ドル~240ドルほど。さらに、体系に合わせて作るカスタムやテーラーメイドは、およそ500ドル〜900ドルと少々お高めですが、すべてハンドメイドで作るため、ウェイティングリストが出来るほどの人気です。ニューヨークに来たら、ぜひ自分だけの本場デニムを手に入れてみてはいかがでしょう？
