待望のMLB2008年シーズンが開幕！　そしてその直前の3月下旬に嬉しいニュースが飛び込んできました。ヤンキースで６年目のシーズンを迎えた松井秀喜選手が、ついに結婚を発表したのです！
「僕の一目惚れでした。相手はいろいろと気遣いがよくできるかた。健康面、食事の面、普段の生活習慣から何からしっかりと考えてこれからやってくれると思います。常に良い体調でグラウンドに行けるでしょう」
結婚発表会見で、松井選手は顔をほころばせながらそう語りました。

野球選手に限らず、結婚と共にパフォーマンスが向上する選手が多いというのはプロスポーツ界では有名なセオリー。生涯の伴侶を得ると共に夜に出かける機会は減り、食生活は安定し、と同時に、これまで以上の責任感が生まれます。まさに良いこと尽くめで、一気に成績が伸びるのは当然と言えるでしょう。そして、松井選手も開幕直後の4月4日には今季初、結婚後初となるホームランを放ちました。オープン戦では1本もホームランが出ずに心配もされましたが、それが嘘のような好調振り。早くも「結婚効果」が出ているのでしょうか？

今季のヤンキースの前評判は決して高くなく、宿敵レッドソックスを優勝候補筆頭に推す声が多いのも事実。過去7年連続で世界一から遠ざかっている名門球団にとって、さらに苦しい1年になることも充分に予想されます。そしてそんなヤンキースには、プロフェッショナルヒッター松井の貢献度が重要なのは言うまでもありません。若手も増えたチームを、ベテランの域に差し掛かった松井がどれだけ支えられるか。過去数年のようにケガに悩まされることはなく、シーズンを通じて活躍できるか。頼れる新妻の力も借りて、新婚ほやほやのゴジラが大暴れするシーンを期待したいものです！
