先月 “ライフスタイル”のコーナーで、ニューヨークの老舗のブックストア、『Strand Book Store（ストランド・ブックストア）』のトートバッグをご紹介しましたが、今回は、アメリカ合衆国で最大の書店チェーンであり、また最大の専門小売店である『Barnes & Noble（バーンズ・アンド・ノーブル）』のストア・トートをご紹介します。“アメリカ国内最大のチェーン・ブックストア”である『バーンズ・アンド・ノーブル』は、国内に、開店予定店舗も含めると約900店舗の数を誇る書店です。その形態は、まるでデパートのような広大な敷地面積や、エレベーター付きで３階建てなどの広さを誇る店舗もあれば、その州ごとの名物巨大ショッピングモールなどに入っている店舗もあるのですが、どの店舗でも共通していえることは、書籍や雑誌の種類が豊富なことはもちろんのこと、CDやDVDなどの音楽ソフトのほか、ステーショナリーや雑貨、ギフト、ゲームなどもそろえられていることです。また、一番の特徴といえば“店内でゆっくりと本が読める”こと。日本ではちょっと考えられませんが、ここでは、床に足を延ばして座り、お気に入りの本をじっくり読んだりする人や、ノートやパソコンを取り出して、お目当ての本を見ながら学校の宿題をする学生の姿が多く見られます。“ゆっくりくつろぐ”といえば、『バーンズ・アンド・ノーブル』のほとんどの店舗には、店内の一部に『スターバックス』が入っていて、おいしいコーヒ−やケーキ、サンドイッチなどを味わいながらゆったりした時間を過ごせるのも大きな魅力です。

そんな『バーンズ・アンド・ノーブル』のストア・トートこそ、じつは“ブック・ストアのトートバッグ”の草分け的存在。今では、その定番だったデザインはなくなってしまいましたが、丈夫さと軽さ、安さ、手頃なサイズ、と使う人のニーズにあった最高のトートバッグ、とニューヨーカーにも大人気です。
