ニューヨークでは、ハーレム、ヒスパニック・ハーレム、リトルイタリー、チャイナタウンと、たくさんの人種が自分たちの国のコミュニティーを形成していて、そのエリアのなかで、衣類や音楽などのカルチャーを全面的にアピールしています。そのひとつとしてもっとも目立つのが、食文化。多国籍文化の人々が暮らすだけでなく、観光としても訪れているニューヨークなので、その “食”に関するバリエーションが豊富なことは言うまでもありません。今回、ここでご紹介するのは韓国料理。マンハッタンでは、ヘラルド・スクエアに大きなコリアンタウンがあり、ここには、韓国のスーパーマーケットやCD＆DVDショップなどがひしめくなか、韓国式アカスリの専門店や韓国料理の専門店が見逃せないところです。『めざましマガジン』vol.04で紹介している『GAHM MI OAK（ガンミオク）』も、このコリアンタウンにあり、韓国人に限らず、地元のニューヨーカーや観光客達の人気を集めています。お客さんのお目当ては、人気ナンバー１メニューのソーロンタン（牛肉を煮込んだ白濁したスープ）。その他のレストランで自慢のキムチチゲやスンドフのような辛みはまったくなく、牛の骨などをじっくりと煮込んだあっさりスープが胃にも優しく、牛の関節のコラーゲンは美肌にももってこい！　素材本来の旨味と、ごく薄い塩味しかついていないので、自分で塩こしょうで味を整え、一緒に出される刻みネギをたっぷり入れていただきます。お通しにどんっと出されるキムチは『ガンミオク』オリジナルの独特の風味があり、そのコクの深さに「コリアンタウンのなかで一番好き」という人も多いそう。ソーロンタンの専門店として有名な『ガンミオク』ですが、この際、食べたことの無い“本場の韓国料理”に、どんどんチャレンジしてみては？
