セントラルパークをはじめ、街の木々の葉が赤々と紅葉しながらも、秋の深まりを楽しむ間もなく、ニューヨークはどんどん気温が下がり、初冬の気配を感じています。これからますます寒さが厳しくなるニューヨークですが、今回は、秋の夜長や、部屋にこもりがちになるこれからの季節に向かってぴったりな“編み物”をテーマに、ニュ−ヨークらしさたっぷりのかわいい人気ニットショップ『PURL（プール）』をご紹介します。
日本では、“編み物”と聞くと“女性が”するもの、という印象が強いのですが、ここニューヨークでは、編み物愛好家は、女性の数も男性の数も、あまり変わりはありません。なので、ニットショップで男性の姿を複数見ることも珍しくはありませんし、「教室には通いたいけど、女性と一緒のクラスにはちょっと抵抗がある」という男性のために、男性だけの編み物教室を開いているところも複数存在し、ゲイオンリーのクラスもあったりするものも、じつにニューヨークらしい特徴です。
ここニューヨークで、性別や年齢を問わず、なぜ編み物が人気があるかというと、編み物を単なる“直接利用するため（衣類や小物）の物を作る”とか“趣味の一環として”ではなく、医学的な観点で、またはメンタルヘルスのことを考えているからなんです。まず、編み物は、脳と目、指先を細かく連続的に動かすことで脳を活性化させ、また、作る物（セーターや帽子など）によってパターンを読み、編み目の記号を見ながら編み目を数えていく、ということ、この動作が老化防止に大きな成果をあげるのだそう。また、静かな部屋でハーブティーを飲み、ゆったりした音楽を静かに聞きながら編み物をすることで、日々の仕事や人づきあいの中で生じる、大都会の中でこそ生まれる独特のストレスからも、開放されるという、ニューヨーカーの最先端のリラックス法、という人もいます。
教育の一環として編み物を教える親も居るそうです。ここでご紹介する『プール』にも、趣味や実益だけでなく、そんな目的もあって通う人達もたくさん！
