ワシントンD.C.は、全米50州に属さない特別な地区なので、街の規模も小さく散策しやすい都市と思われがちですが、歴史的建造物に加えて博物館、美術館などの文化的建造物も充実していて、見所いっぱいの街なだけに、1日で効率良く観光するには意外と難しい街でもあります。そこでおすすめしたいのが、歴史に詳しいツアーガイドさんと一緒に、観光ポイントをうまくおさえながら車で効率良く周る『ワシントン1日観光』。ニューヨークからは、ビジネスマンの通勤の足でもあるアムトラックという列車に乗って、アメリカ合衆国の首都、政治の中心であるワシントンD.C.へ向かいます。
早朝ホテルを出発、ガイドさんとホテル正面にあるペンステーションへ移動します。帰りのためのホームの説明を聞いて、ガイドさんとはここでお別れ、一行はアムトラックに乗り込みワシントンへの出発です。列車に乗りしばらくすると、がアムトラックの車窓から見えてきます。終点のワシントンD.C.へ到着するまでにニュージャージー、フィラデルフィア、ボルチモアと、様々な都市を通過しながら、様変わりする広大な景色をゆっくり楽しめるのも列車の旅の醍醐味。
約3時間半後、ワシントンユニオン駅に到着。現地ツアーガイドと合流し、一行はバンに乗り込みます。最初に訪れるのは、アメリカ合衆国の政治の中枢機関、国会議事堂、次に歴代大統領官邸、今はブッシュ大統領が住むホワイトハウス、そして有名なリンカーン大統領の像があるリンカーン記念堂へ。この記念堂へと上る階段は、マーチン・ルーサー・キング牧師があの『I have a dream…』の名演説をした場所でもあります。
さらにリンカーン記念塔からアーリントン記念橋を渡ってバージニア州へ。ペンタゴンの外観をみつつ、昼食場所となるファッションモールへ移動します。このファッションモールでは、1時間の自由時間があるので、その間に、昼食をとったり買い物をしたりなどの自由時間。昼食後は、ジョン・F・ケネディや彼の娘など、4人の遺体も眠っている有名なアーリントン国立墓地へ。そして桜が美しいので有名な、ポトマック公園の桜並木を通り、航空宇宙博物館へと向います。こちらの博物館は名前の通り、航空機や宇宙船に関する展示物がある博物館。ガイドさんが見所を案内してくれた後は、約1時間の自由時間です。ライト兄弟のコーナーやいろいろな体験コーナーもあるので、小さいお子さんもいろいろと楽しめますよ。ここでの人気のお土産は、宇宙でも水の中でも無重力の中でもつかえるというペンやフリーズドライのアイスだそうです。かわったお土産として喜ばれるかもしれませんね。このように、見どころ満載のワシントンD.C.を、わずか1日で効率良くおもいっきり楽しめるこのツアー。日本からアメリカ東海岸を訪れたのならば、この機会を逃すことなく、この政治の中心地ワシントンを訪れ、過去の時代背景、歴史などに思いを寄せてみてはいかがでしょう。
