鮮やかな手さばきでターンテーブルから繰り出される音楽で観客を魅了するDJは、クラブシーンの要と言っても過言ではありません。そんな憧れのDJテクニックをクラブミュージックのメッカ、ニューヨークで学んでみませんか？
若手アーティストやミュージシャンなど個性派ニューヨーカー達が集うグリニッチビレッジに位置するアメリカ初のDJ育成学校「SCRATCH DJ ACADEMY」（スクラッチ・DJ・アカデミー）は、ターンテーブルに触れたことのない初心者はもちろん、さらに技術を磨きたいという現役DJ達からも定評を得ている話題のスクールです。
受講条件は、音楽が好きで、DJに興味がある人なら誰でもOK。過去には、最年少で8歳、最高で60歳の生徒までいたというから驚きです。１クラスは12〜30名ですが、ヘッド・インストラクターとアシスタント数名でクラスが行われるので、一人一人丁寧な指導を受けることができます。また、授業は全て英語で行われますが、本場ニューヨークでDJのテクニックを学びたい！という日本人のかたも、もちろん受講可能です。
なんと言っても、SCRATCHのインストラクター陣の多くが、スクラッチ・テクニックの生みの親であるGrandwizzard Theodoreさんを始め、ITF（国際ターンテーブル協会）トーナメントや、日本でも毎年予選が開催されているDMC（DJミキシング・チャンピオンシップ）の世界トーナメントなどで名を残したカリスマDJ達というのが、大きなポイントです！
SCRATCHのクラスでは、自分のスキルに合わせて7段階のコースから選べますが、ビギナーの方は、｢DJ101｣コースがおすすめ。DJの歴史や機材の説明から、DJに必要な基礎テクニック（ミキシング、ブレンディング、ビート・マッチング、フェーディング、スクラッチングなど）に加え、業界で活躍するための心得やアドバイスなどを現役DJの講師達が伝授してくれます。また、DJはお店や観客の雰囲気を読んで選曲をしなければならないため、どんなシーンにも対応できるよう、ヒップホップ、ハウス、レゲエ、トランスなど、色々なジャンルの曲をミックスし、スムーズにつないでいくテクニックを学びます。クラス時間外でも、自由にターンテーブルを使って練習できる時間も設けられているので、どんどん自分のスキルを磨くことができます。DJには憧れるけど、「自分とは違う世界」と敬遠しがちだった人も、基本のテクニックさえマスターすれば、今まで気付かなかった才能に目覚めるかも…？しれませんね。
