「ニューヨークに勉強をしに行きます」と言ったとき、きっとそれを聞いた誰もが、語学留学？　アート？　ダンス？　と想像するでしょう。でもここはニューヨーク、ちょっとひと味違ったことを学ぶのもいいですよね。
そんな“ちょっと人とは違う留学”を体験したい人におすすめしたいのが、この『New York Bartending School』。ニューヨーク州教育局の認定のもと開校さ れているこの学校では、キャリアを積み重ねた超プロフェッショナルのバーテンダーや、一流クラブのオーナーたちが講師となり、卒業の翌日からバーテンダーとして働ける、実践的な授業を行っています。教室内には、実際に使用されているものと同じバー・カウンターが設置されており、日々厳しい実習が繰り返されています。卒業生のほとんどは、卒業後間もなく、早い人は翌日からマンハッタンの人気のバーやホテルラウンジで シェイカーを振っていたり、また、ニューヨークを飛び出して、リゾート地のホテルや豪華客船内のバーなどで働く人も多いそう。これは、インストラクターとしてのネットワークをいかし、生徒たちの希望条件にあわせた就職案内やカウンセリングが充実してるからこそなせる技。学費はコースによって異なりますが、どのコースも平均500ドル前後（時期によって若干異なるためその都度要問い合わせ）です。

「マンハッタンの人気のバーなら、一晩で２〜300ドル、週末なら５〜600ドルを稼ぐバーテンがほとんど。もしあなたが18 才以上で、お酒が好き、またはバーテンの仕事やお酒に興味があったら、入校して40時間でプロのバーテンダーになれますよ 」とは、校長のフェルナンドさんの弁。
