解説
ヴィクトル・ユーゴの小説「ああ無情」原作の 「レ・ミゼラブル」は、1987年のトニー賞8部門を受賞、その他に50以上もの賞を受賞した21年間のロングランを記録した大傑作。1985年のロンド ン初上演から、38カ国で上演されたこの舞台は、世界中で5300万人もの観客を魅了した。今回ブロードウェイの舞台に再び戻ってきた「レ・ミゼラブル」だが、もともとは6ヶ月間の期間限定公演で2007年春に終了する予定であった。しかし、大勢の「レ・ミゼラブル」ファンの後押しがあるのか、既に夏まで公演期間が延長された。ひょっとしたら、さらなら延長もあるかもしれない。日本では日本人キャストによる「レ・ミゼラブル」も人気だが、ミュージカルの本場ブロードウェイでも、「レ・ミゼラブル」をぜひ観て欲しい。

あらすじ
舞台は19世紀フランス、空腹に苦しむ家族の ためにたった一片のパンを盗んだことで19年間の牢獄暮らしを強いられたジャン・バルジャン。仮出獄許可がおり開放されたジャンだったが、人々からは偏見 と不信の目で見られ、彼の心は絶望と憎しみで歪んでいく。そんな彼に、一夜の食事と宿を与えてくれた教会からジャンは高価な銀の食器を盗んでしまうが、そ の罪を許し、銀の燭台まで持たせてくれた司教のおかげでジャンの心は癒されていくのだった…。
時は流れ、神に心を預けたジャンは身分を隠し、市長 になっていた。ある日、馬車の下敷きになった人を救うため、身を呈してその馬車を持ち上げた。偶然、この現場に居合わせたジャベール刑事は、仮出獄中に逃 げ出した怪力の囚人、ジャン・バルジャンを思い出すが、あえて気付かぬふりをし、彼の代わりに誤認逮捕された男が処刑されることをジャンに伝えた。それを 知ったジャンは…
