解説
プッチーニの名作オペラ『La Boheme(ラ・ボエーム)』を、舞台を1990年代初頭のニューヨークはイースト・ビレッジに置き換えた作品。『La Boheme』にインスピレーションを受け、故ジョナサン・ラーソンが書き下ろしたロック・ミュージカル。当時のニューヨークはイースト・ビレッジ、アルファベットシティーを舞台に、麻薬、HIV、同性愛など普通のミュージカルでは取り上げられることのないテーマを元に、社会的な問題をロックにのせてストレートに『今を生きる』ということを問いかけてくれる。

マーク (売れない映像作家でロジャーのルームメイト)、ロジャー（ロックミュージシャンで、エイズに侵されている）、ミミ（麻薬中毒のクラブダンサーで、エイズに侵されている）、トム・コリンズ（ロジャー、モリーン、マーク、ベニーの元ルームメイトでエイズに侵されている）、 エンジェル（ドラッグ・クィーン、トムの恋人となる）、モリーン（マークを振って、レズビアンとなる）、ジョアンヌ（ハーバード大卒の弁護士、モリーンの恋人）

あらすじ
舞台はニューヨークのイースト・ビレッジ。家賃 (レント) を支払うことさえままならない売れないロックミュージシャンのロジャーと映像作家のマークは、古びれた安アパートに住み着いていた。あるクリスマスイブの夜、ロジャー 達の真下に住むミミは、ロウソクに火を点けるマッチを借りにロジャーのアパートを訪れる。二人は出会った瞬間から互いに惹かれあうのだが、ロジャーは自分がエイズに侵されている負い目と、同じ病気で先立ってしまった元恋人との経験から、ついミミに対して冷たくあしらってしまう。。。若いアーティスト達が多く住むアルファベトシティーで夢と現実の狭間に苦悩し、もがき苦しむ中で、彼らが観客に訴えかけるメッセージとは・・・。
