解説
ピューリッツァ賞を受賞した、アリス・ウォーカーの小説「ザ・カラー・パープル」を基に製作。1985年、スティーヴン・スピルバーグが映画化。舞台版では、40年もの長い歳月に渡る黒人姉妹の心の交流と深い絆が、ジャズ、ブルース等の音楽が効果的に取り入れられて描かれている。黒人を主役にしたミュージカルは、ブロードウエイでなかなかヒットしにくいのが、オペラ『ポギー＆ベス』に匹敵する完成度の高い黒人演劇となっている。2006年度のトニー賞最優秀新作作品賞の最有力候補である。

セリー（生き別れになった妹を思いつつ暴力的な夫に耐えて生活している）、ミスター（4人の子供を持つやもめ。後にセリーの夫となる）、シャグ・アヴェリ（ミスターの愛人だが、セリーに生きる勇気を与える歌手）、ネッティ（セリーの最愛の妹。ミスターから逃れてアフリカへ行く）
あらすじ
1909年のアメリカ、ジョージア州の小さな町が舞台。仲の良い黒人の幼い姉妹、セリーとネッティが巨木に腰掛けて楽しそうに遊んでいる。そして、まだあどけなさが残る14歳の少女セリーが身ごもるが、出産した子供と引き離されてしまう。絶望の淵にいたセリーの支えは、美しく頭のいい妹のネッティだった。やがてセリーはミスターという男に嫁つぐが、彼は前妻との間に4人の子を持ち、セリーは朝から晩まで掃除、洗濯、料理、子供達の世話と、まるで奴隷のような生活を送っていた。そんな中、ミスターの淫らな手が優しい妹へと向けられると、セリーは妹をアフリカへと逃がすのだった。ネッティから届いた膨大な手紙をミスターは隠してセリーに見せようとはしなかった。そんなある日、ミスターの愛人であり歌手のシャグが連れて来られる。シャグはセリーの忍従の人生に驚き同情する。そして、セリーは美しい心と自立の精神を持つシャグに憧れを持ち二人の間に友情が芽生えるのだった。
