解説
ニュー・アムステルダム劇場が作られた’03年当時の青写真そのままに復元し、ディズニーはここをブロードウェイの拠点劇場とした。そして、『美女と野獣』に次ぐブロードウェイ進出第二弾ミュージカルとして’97年『ライオン・キング』がオープニングナイトを迎えたのである。ディズニーの進出は、それまでポルノ街として観光客に嫌われ恐れられていた42丁目の再開発に大きな弾みとなった。ディズニーは、ニュー・アムステルダム劇場を市から年1ドル、99年契約で賃貸している。

あらすじ
プライドランドで、ライオン王ムファサの跡継ぎシンバ誕生を祝って集まった動物達がひれ伏して将来の王に敬意を表す。アフリカの大地でも命の循環は繰り返されるのだ。スカーにとって兄は王座への弊害でシンバはさらに邪魔な存在だ。そこでスカーはシンバに「象の墓場」行きをそそのかし手下のハイエナ達に襲わせる。しかし、間一髪ムファサがシンバを救う。次にスカーは、シンバを峡谷に置き去りにしヌーの大群の暴走に襲わせる。シンバを間一髪で救い力尽き崖にしがみついたムファサをスカーはヌーの暴走の中に突き落とし殺害する。父の死の罪をかぶされたシンバはプライドランドを去る。ムファサとシンバのいなくなった国で王に君臨したスカーは、好き放題である。そして、王国は窮乏を極めていく。一方シンバは異国の地でたくましい雄ライオンに成長するのだった…。
