セントラルパークのランドマークとしても有名ですが、都会暮らしの子供たちにとって、外出先のお楽しみのひとつといえば、セントラルパークの動物園。 ニューヨーク州には、現在４カ所の動物園があり、その有名どこといえば、やはり“ニューヨーカーのオアシス”といわれているセントラルパーク内のセントラルパーク・ズーです。高級ブランドブティックや、ホテルが建ち並ぶ５番街の入り口から、わずか５分足らずで都会の喧噪はどこへやら、森の木々に覆われた、緑豊かな動物園が登場します。その立地から“小さくてつまらなそう”と誤解されがちですが、夜行性の動物たちだけを集めた『Rain Forest』や、人気者の北極熊の動きが水中から見学できる巨大水槽のほか、年間数本組まれる特別イベントなど、充実度満点の穴場的動物園です。園内は基本的に無休で、月～金曜は10:00～17:00、土日と祝日は17:30までの営業で、入場料は３歳以下は無料、12歳までは１ドル、65歳以上は1.25ドル、大人は６ドル。未だ野鳥が飛び交うセントラルパーク内をゆっくり散策するなら、地図やイベント情報を公園中央部の案内所『The Dairy』（11:00～16:00月休）でゲットすると便利です。
