ニューヨークのホテル探しの楽しみのひとつに、“スタイリッシュなデザイナーズ・ホテルから選びたい”という探しかたもあります。そんななか、まずご紹介したいのが、この『HUDSON HOTEL（ハドソン・ホテル）』です。このホテルは、はホテル通ならもちろんご存知のフィリップ・スタルクとイアン・シュレーガーが手掛けたデザイナーズ・ホテル。フィリップ・スタルクは、日本でも有名な、東京都は隅田川沿いのビール会社の“金色のオブジェ”の建物を設計した建築家。またイアン・シュレーガーは、洗練された生活時間と空間の提供というコンセプト・ホテルの生みの親であるホテル・プロデューサー(ホテリアー)であり、不動産デベロッパーもしても有名です。そんな凄腕のふたりが手掛けた『ハドソン・ホテル』は、コンクリートの打ちっぱなしのエントランスが印象的な建物で、中に入って待ち受けるのはイエローの光に包まれたエスカレーター。そこを昇りきれば、デザイナーのこだわりが感じられるレセプションに到着します。昼は優しい木漏れ日が差し、夜は隙間から星空が見えるその空間では、その不思議な非日常空間に、誰もが心が躍るでしょう。
客室はといえば、古いアパートメントの内部を改造し、“船”をイメージして造られているだけあり、まるで船室を思わせるような雰囲気が印象的。こじんまりとした空間を、モダンに、そして有効に使うために、シャワールームがガラス越しになっていたり、鏡が両脇にあったりと、さまざまな工夫が凝らされているのも見所のひとつです。また、地下鉄の駅からも近く、セントラルパークやリンカーン・センターが徒歩圏内という絶好のロケーションにあるというのも魅力のひとつで、周辺には、24時間営業のデリやスターバックス・カフェなどもあってとても便利。また、ホテル内にもデザイナ−のこだわりが感じられるモダンで洗練されたバー『HUDSON BAR』があり、ここは『SEX AND THE CITY』でも使われたバーで、以来、人気の的になっていることは言うまでもありません。滞在、観光、食べる、遊ぶをトータルしても、まさにニューヨークの都会的な滞在を望むかたにはぴったりのホテルといえます。
