このネイト・ロビンソンに関して特徴的なのは、なんといってもその小ささ。ネイトの身長は、わずか１７５cmに過ぎません。２メートルを超える選手など当たり前のＮＢＡでは、彼の短躯はひときわ際立って見えます。一見すると、まるでゴリラの集団の中に可愛い小人が混じったかのよう。
ただ、それほど小さいからといって、「リトル・ネイト」を決して侮ってはいけません。まず、彼のアスレチック能力はニックス内でもＮｏ．１。類い稀なバネを活かしてコートを跳ね回り、ゴールにひたむきに向かう姿は爽快感に満ちています。小さな背丈と、スケールの大きなプレ－のギャップは楽しく、ネイトは、地元ニューヨークでは当然のようにすぐに人気者になりました。
そして、驚くなかれ！ チーム１小柄なこのネイト・ロビンソンは、今年のＮＢＡオールスターゲーム・スラムダンク・コンテストに出場し、なんと見事に優勝を飾ってしまったのです！ バスケの華・ダンクの豪快さを競うこのコンテストでは、背の高い選手のほうが有利なのは言うまでもありません。しかし、大技を連発したネイトは、そんな不利な要素をすべて覆してくれました。身長１７０cm台の選手がダンクコンテストを優勝したのは、史上わずかか２度目のこと。この驚くべきパフォーマンスで、ネイトはその魅力を全米に向けて大きくアピールしてみせたのです。
