波瀾万丈だった２００６年ＭＬＢも終了・・・。これからのニューヨークはバスケに燃えます！

田口壮選手の所属する、セントルイス・カージナルスがワールドチャンピオンに輝き、今年のメジャーリーグ・ベースボールは終わりました。ニューヨークの２チーム、ヤンキースとメッツはプレーオフで残念ながら途中敗退。しかし、ヤンキースはケガ人続出を乗り越えて地区優勝は達成。メッツも「ミラクル」と言われる快進撃でワールドシリーズ進出寸前まで迫りました。ニューヨーカーにとって、今季もエキサイティングで思い出深いシーズンだったと言えるのではないでしょうか。

また日本人にとっても、我らが松井秀喜選手を巡るドラマがありました。９月12日、復帰戦の日。5月の悪夢のようなケガから戻って来た松井選手を、轟音のような歓声で迎えたヤンキースタジアムのファンに、「たくさんのファンがスタンディングオベーションで迎えてくれたので、忘れられない瞬間になった」と
試合後に松井選手はそう語りました。もちろん、この日を決して忘れられないのは本人だけではありません。過去３年間の松井選手の実績をニューヨーカーが認め、ケガからの帰還をもろ手で迎えてくれました。それは、そこにいたすべての者が感動するような、素晴らしい雰囲気だったのです。そして、こんな最高の夜を本当に意味のあるものにするためにも、松井選手には、これからも打ちまくってニューヨーカーを喜ばせ続けてほしいものです。来年、ヤンキースをワールドチャンピオンに導いたとき、松井選手の復活ストーリーは真の意味で完結するのですから。

さて、野球は終わり、ニューヨークの街はNBAバスケットボールの方に興味を移しつつあります。待望のNBAシーズンは10月下旬よりすでに開幕しました。この新陳代謝の速さも、アメリカンスポーツの楽しさのひとつですよね。
来月以降、このコラムでは昨年同様にNBAの魅力を伝えて行こうと思っています。冬の間も、ニューヨークのスポーツからは目が離せませんよ！
