10月末の開幕以来、今年もいきなり熱い戦いを続けている」NBA。今回もその中から、去年に引き続き、ニューヨークエリアでNBAを観戦に行かれる皆さんのために、注目すべきプレーヤーを紹介してみたいと思います。

アメリカ４大スポーツの中心地であり、巨大マーケットのニューヨークエリアには、やはり多くのスター選手が所属しています。そして中でも、その動きから一時たりとも目が離せないのが、ニュージャージー・ネッツに所属するジェイソン・キッド選手。このキッドは、自分で多くの点を取りにいくタイプの選手ではなく、見事なパスでチームメートをコントロールする華麗なる司令塔です。驚くべき視野の広さを持つキッドのプレーは、とにかくスマートという言葉がぴったり！

もともと、ダラスやフェニックスといったチームに在籍していたキッドがニュージャージーにやって来たのは、2001年のこと。それまでのネッツは、毎年下位をうろうろする弱小チームでした。しかし、そんな負け犬軍団が、キッド一人の加入によって生まれ変わったのです。2001～02年シーズン、キッドのマジックパスによって一躍強豪チームに変身したネッツは、NBAファイナルまで勝ち進み、全米を驚かせました。以降、キッドは“リーグ屈指の司令塔”として、ネッツもリーグを代表する強豪として、共にNBAに君臨し続けています。

ニューヨークのミッドタウンからわずか15分、ニュージャージー・ネッツのアリーナに行ったら、まずはキッドの絶妙のパスに注目してみましょう。「背中に目でもあるの？」と、思わず唸ってしまうようなマジックパスを観るだけでも、アリーナに足を運ぶ価値はあるはずです。これまで、オールスター出場７回、アシスト王５回の、まさに歴史に残る名選手。このキッドのプレーを目撃することは、NBAの歴史の一部を目撃するのと同じことなのです！
