地元の星・ステフォン・マーブリーは、鮮やかな“アメリカンドリーム”の体現者

例年以上に寒い今年のニューヨーク、旅行に訪れてはみたものの、余りに強烈な寒さに驚いたという人も多いのではないでしょうか。しかし、この劇寒に耐えられなくなったときは、熱いマジソンスクウエア・ガーデンまでNBAを見に行きましょう。そこでは、ニックスの選手たちが連日激しい戦いを繰り広げ、ニューヨーカーに冬の寒さを忘れさせてくれています。

さて、そんなニックスから今回皆さんに紹介したいのが、チーム最高のスタープレーヤー、ステフォン・マーブリー選手です。
このマーブリーは、ニューヨーク・コニーアイランドの貧民街の出身。子供の頃からニックスのファンで、マジソンスクウエア・ガーデンでのプレーを夢見て成長しました。貧しい家庭での苦しい生活に耐えた彼は、バスケの腕だけでプロ選手にまで上りつめ、いまでは、正真正銘のニックスのスーパースターとなりました。幼少期からの夢を叶えた彼は、まさに“アメリカンドリーム”の体現者なのです。

しかし、そうやってお金も一流選手の称号も得たマーブリーですが、唯一手にしていないのが“勝利”。彼のこれまでのキャリアで優勝経験はないし、それに近づいたことすらありません。マーブリーは以前、こう語っていました。「この街じゃ、勝たなければなにも始まらないんだ。試合に勝ったとき、初めてプレーの内容についても語ってもらえる。だけど実、際は誰も中身なんて気にしちゃいない。ニューヨーカーの興味は、ただ“勝利”」だけなんだ」。現時点でも、マーブリーはマジソンスクウエア・ガーデンを満員にすることも、コニーアイランドの仲間たちを幸福な気分にさせることもできています。しかしそれだけでは満足せず、彼は今夜もただ勝利に向かって熱いラッシュを続けているのです。
