今回はニューヨークの人気量販店であり、日本での第一号店が2008年秋に原宿にオープン予定の『H&M（Hennes&Mauritz） 』を御紹介します。1942年にスウェーデンで創業、現在24カ国において1346店舗を持つ『H&M』は、ニューヨークはマンハッタンに8店舗を展開しています。『GAP』やアバクロの名称で人気の『Abercrombie&Fitch』に負けず、トレンドアイテムを手頃な価格で購入できるとあって、一般のカスタマーはもちろん、ひそかにアパレル業界のデザイナーたちも利用するショップなのです。

レディースを筆頭にメンズ、ティーン、キッズを各階に分けているので、彼氏や家族とショッピングするのにも最適。オンにもオフにも使えるアイテムがずらりと並び、コンサバなものだけでなく遊び心のあるカジュアルウェアもたくさんそろっているのが大きな特徴。高そうなアイテムで、お洒落なスタイリングをしている人に「どこで買ったの？」と聞くと、意外にも『H&M』という答えが返ってくることもよくあることです。また、『H&M』は話題作りに余念が無いことでも知られていて、2004年には『CHANEL』のデザイナーとして知られているカール・ラガーフェルドとのコラボレーションアイテムをコレクションとして発売し、その際には、開店の10分後には全商品が完売するという事態を生む反響ぶり。その後、2005年にステラ・マッカートニー、2006年にはヴィクター＆ロルフとのコラボレーションアイテムを発売し、いずれも開店前に行列を作り、開店時に並べられたほぼ全てのアイテムが数十分内に完売するという大反響ぶりとなりました。

先頃3月末には全世界に向けて第4段の話題作としてマドンナとのコラボレーションアイテム『M by Madonna』を手掛け、グラマラスでクールなマドンナのスタイルを反映した、トラックスーツやレザージャケットなど多くの商品が並びました。彼女のサイン入りトレンチコート世界限定90着のうち10着が無料で手に入るという話題を振りまいた5番街の店舗では、朝の5時すぎから行列ができ、大変な混雑となったのも不思議ではありませんね。

今年からヨーロッパ、アメリカ大陸のみならず、中国を筆頭にアジア進出を図るH&M。来年の日本でのオープンがとても待ち遠しいですね。
