洗練された商品、高級感のある店内のイメージは当たり前すぎて、意外と通過点（？）に過ぎなかったりしますが、そのバーニーズには興味深い歴史と「やはり王道！」、と納得せざる終えない理由があるのです。1923年、マンハッタンの7番街17丁目に、バーニー・プレスマンによって設立された『Barney’s New York （バーニーズ・ニューヨーク）』。創業当時は、クオリティの高いメンズとボーイズの衣料品をディスカウント価格で提供する店でした。マディソン・アベニューの本店を筆頭に、今となってはアメリカに33店舗のお店を構える巨大スペシャリティー・ストアとなりましたが、創業時お金の無いバーニーが、店の家賃と40着のスーツの仕入代金として必要な500ドルを得るために、妻の勧めで彼女の結婚指輪を質入したという、涙なしには語れない有名なストーリーが残っています。1970年にはウェアハウスセール（倉庫一掃セール）で注目を浴び、また76年には、アメリカで初めてジョルジオ・アルマーニを紹介し、その独創的なサービスや宣伝でファッションカルチャーの発信源としてのポジションを確立させたのです。ウェメンズラインを始めたのも同時期です。また、バーニーズといえば、忘れてはいけないのがユニークでユーモア溢れるウィンドウ・ディスプレイ。創業者バーニーが、アバンギャルドアート出身のイギリス人ディスプレイデザイナー、サイモン・ドォーナンを招きいれたのが1970年代。当時のマドンナなどのメディアアイコンを、アートと結び付けユーモラスに飾ったウィンドウで、センセーショナルを起こしました。そのユーモアと独創性は今も受け継がれていて、マネキンの頭にボクシンググローブがかぶさっていたり、足に首輪がついていたり、と常識を覆すようなクリエイティビティで、見る人の目を楽しませてくれます。さあ、いかがでしょう？　当たり前に思っていたバーニーズの歩みを知ると、これからお店に行くのが楽しくなってきませんか？
